The Amyotha Hluttaw has approved changes to the Ward and Village-tract Administration Bill 2012 that will remove the guest registration requirement.

Despite criticism from Defence Services Hluttaw representatives who stressed the need to maintain the law due to security concerns, a majority of members of parliament approved the proposal to remove the sections that require residents to report overnight guests, state media reported.

U Aung Kyi Nyunt, member of Amyotha Hluttaw Bill Committee, was quoted as saying that the colonial-era legislation that empowers authorities to detain suspects should be removed in order to bring it in line with the current situation.
