After taking control of Burma during a coup d'etat this Monday, the Burma Army told Kachin State ministers they released the next day that they had three days to vacate government housing in the capital city, Myitkyina.

Sai Kyaw Thu Soe, central executive committee member of the National League for Democracy (NLD) for Kachin State, told NMG the Army released some of the ministers yesterday. But others are still being detained. One is the Kachin State Chief Minister Dr Khet Aung, who’s under house arrest in his private residence, according to Sai Kyaw Thu Soe. The Tatmadaw—as they’re locally called—are also holding NLD chairs for Shwegu, Puta-O, Machanbaw and Nogmung townships.

Some ministers who have been released have already started removing their property from the guest residences, Sai Kyaw Thu Soe said. We haven't met any of them yet because we’re not allowed to go to the government housing."

Parliamentarians who were released in Naypyitaw were also instructed to move out of their government residences.  

Army soldiers arrested senior NLD leaders, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma’s president, Win Myint, in the early hours on Monday, before the first session of parliament was held to validate the 2020 general election results.

Myint Swe, the military-appointed vice president in the NLD government, was given temporary power as president and he immediately declared a state of emergency, transferring legislative, executive and judicial power to Commander-in-Chief Snr-Gen Min Aung Hlaing. The army chief has appointed new union ministers for Parliament.

The coup happened after the Tatmadaw refused to concede to the NLD’s landslide victory during the November 8 election.
