The Kachin State People’s Party (KSPP) has called on the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) to practically implement the emergence of a federal democratic union in accordance with the 1947 Panglong Agreement.

This came as a response to the NLD call for ethnic parties to cooperate with the new NLD government.

U Kwan Gaung Aung Kham, Vice-Chair-2 of the KSPP said: “The NLD mainly needs to implement the 1947 Panglong Agreement. The KSPP will make discussions with other parties in ethnic regions on whether we will join hands with the NLD or not.”

After securing a landslide victory in the 2020 General Elections, the NLD sent invitation letters to the ethnic parties. The NLD claims it will make constant efforts for the emergence of a democratic federal union and its objectives are similar to those of ethnic parties. The NLD expects the ethnic parties will actively cooperate in the democracy and union affairs to be implemented by the NLD.

The NLD sent its invitation to 48 ethnic parties. The KSPP received the NLD’s letter on 17 November.

The KSPP secured four seats—Swanparabwan Township Constituency-2, Kachin State Constituency-2 in Moemauk Township, Kachin State Constituency-1 in Inganyan Township and the lower house constituency-1 in Inganyan Township.

However, results for one seat in Swanparabwan Township Constituency remain mired in controversy where USPD – military-aligned or military scraped home by only 94 votes delivered by 400 soldiers who all voted USPD. KSPP[TF1]  candidate U Gwan Gaung Aung Kham,  refused to sign form-19 approval of the election calling he resul unfair.
