The Kawthaung-Ranong border checkpoint, which was closed for more than two years due to COVID-19 outbreak, reopened on June 1 under a bilateral agreement, Kawthaung residents told Than Lwin Times.

However, only Kawthaung residents who hold a 14-day Border Pass issued by Thailand are allowed to enter through the Kawthaung-Ranong checkpoint.

 Kawthaung residents said the reopening of the border gate would help businesses recover.

30 Myanmar migrant workers hired by the MOU system were allowed to cross the Thai-Myanmar border at the Kawthaung-Ranong border checkpoint on May 24.

According to the brokers, approximately tens of thousands of individuals are currently waiting to enter the Kawthaung-Ranong border illegally.

Only the transport of commodities is permitted at the Myawaddy-Mae Sot border checkpoint and the Tachileik-Mae Sai border checkpoint, and travelers are still prohibited from crossing the border.
