‘Our target is the 2020 elections,’ an organizer said.

A training in parliamentary affairs was delivered by the All Kachin Youth Union on Monday and Tuesday in Myitkyina, with the aim of promoting interest among young people in Burma’s 2020 general elections.

The workshop was held at the Kachin Youth Center in Manhkring Ward in the Kachin State capital, and featured multiple guest speakers. Twenty young people participated in the event, which included a visit to the Kachin State parliament on Tuesday.

“We have a responsibility to talk to our youth about how parliament processes operate. Then they will understand how government affairs run,” La Ja, who was in charge of the training, told KNG. “Our target is the 2020 elections,” he added.

Trainer Doi Bu—who is also a lawyer—explained that to understand the workings of Parliament, youth must study legislation, as well as the judiciary and the executive branch of government.

"Youths must know about parliament affairs such as how to elect representatives, how to vote in elections, and so on,” Doi Bu said. “They will understand how the election process works. After that, youth will understand what members of parliament are doing.”

If young people don’t have this knowledge, she said, they risk “losing their own rights,” which is why she participated in the training.
