Junta raids hospital in Hpakant, abducts 20 including doctor

Junta troops and allied militia members operating in Hpakant Township, Kachin State, raided a village hospital in Lone Khin Village Tract on April 21, assaulting and abducting a doctor along with 20 medical workers and hospital staff.

At around 7:30 p.m., soldiers and militia members covertly entered Aungyar Village and stormed Mai Hospital. According to a villager from Aungyar, they abducted medical workers, including Doctor Yarzar Tun and 10 nurses.

“Around 7:30 p.m., the soldiers entered the village and beat some local people. They then stormed Mai Hospital. They forced the doctors and nurses to kneel in the lobby. They then took the doctor outside the hospital building and beat him,” he told KNG.

The junta column that entered Aungyar Village was composed of regime soldiers, along with a large number of Warazut militia and militia forces under the command of junta-aligned warlord U Zahkung Ting Ying.

Among the 21 people abducted from Mai Hospital were Doctor Yarzar Tun, nurses Ma Nyo Nyo Aung, Ma Aye Mon Mon Kyaw, Ko Hein Htet Zaw, Ko Chit Nai Nai, Ma Zu Zu Aung, Ma May Thu Kyaw, Ma Jar Mai, Ma Pyae, Ma Wun Thiri, and Ko Ye Htet Khing.

Alongside them, two cooks, two receptionists, and five general workers were also taken away, leaving only two staff members at the hospital.

In addition to the 21 hospital staff, one patient and three caregivers were also abducted by junta troops. The soldiers also confiscated cash, a third-generation Starlink internet device, and 10 mobile phones found inside the hospital. The whereabouts and condition of those abducted remain unknown.

“I heard the soldiers raided the hospital at night and arrested everyone except one female nurse and two patients. There’re also reports that Mai Hospital sometimes treated wounded resistance fighters, and I think that’s why the junta may have targeted it out of resentment,” a Hpakant resident said.

In Hpakant Township, the junta has been launching attacks on Kachin Independence Army (KIA)-controlled areas since April 7, and has also been carrying out military operations in Lone Khin and Hmawsizar villages.

Currently, the junta has deployed about 300 troops to conduct military operations near Hsengtaung Village, which is controlled by the KIA and allied resistance forces.
