Junta Exempts Women from Military Recruitment for Now

On February 21st, the Military Council announced that, currently, women will be exempt from the military draft under the conscription law.

“At present, there are no intentions to include women in the conscript pool under the people's military service law”, Major General Zaw Min Tun, spokesperson for Junta said.

On February 10th, Min Aung Hlaing, the current coup leader, enforced the conscription law, which was enacted in 2010 under former Junta chief Senior General Than Shwe but never became active.

The Junta has also stated that the conscription law will be implemented following the traditional Myanmar New Year holiday in April.

Myanmar citizens, both within and outside the country, are expressing strong opposition to the conscription law, with many young people attempting to emigrate to foreign countries to avoid military service.
