Junta bombing in Paletwa Town kills 2 women, injures 20

The junta launched an airstrike on Arakan Army (AA)-controlled Paletwa Town in Paletwa Township, Chin State on September 29 at around 12:30 pm, killing two women and injuring around 20 people.

A junta fighter jet flying over Paletwa Town dropped two 500-pound bombs and a cluster bomb, triggering explosions at Paletwa Hospital and surrounding areas.

“Junta aircraft dropped two 500-pound bombs and a cluster bomb. Unfortunately, two women lost their lives, and many others were injured, some critically,” said a Paletwa resident.

The deceased have been identified as 40-year-old Daw Thuzar Win and 18-year-old Ma Mya Mya Khin. Some of those in the hospital are in critical condition, according to people familiar with the incident.

The AA seized control of Paletwa Township in January 2024 and has since set up administrative and judicial systems.

“The AA has been governing here for some time, but we’ve never seen an attack like this before. Now, people are deeply worried, and many believe the junta is deliberately targeting and killing civilians,” another Paletwa resident said.

On September 26 and 27, the junta carried out airstrikes on residential areas in Taungup and Thandwe towns, Arakan State, killing one resident and injuring five others, including a child.

In recent days, the junta has intensified airstrikes in AA-controlled areas, forcing residents to remain increasingly vigilant.
