Junta airstrikes kill 4 civilians in Wetlet Township villages

Four civilians were killed and 13 others injured after junta aircraft bombed six villages on the east bank of the Ayeyarwady River in Wetlet Township, Sagaing Region.

The junta launched these deadly air raids over two consecutive days, September 9 and 10.

“The junta’s Y-12 aircraft carried out airstrikes starting from Kyaukmaung Village and hitting a string of villages all the way down to Mandalay Region. In Wetlet Township alone, 4 people were killed and 13 injured,” said Ko Nagarlay, an official from Wetlet Informational Network.

The casualties happened during the attacks on the evening of September 9.

On the evening of September 9, the junta’s Y-12 aircraft bombed Thitseint, Indaung, Yonepinkone, Minkone, Nabepinhla, and Tatthar villages. The following day, a fighter jet from Tada-U Airbase in Mandalay Region dropped a 300-pound bomb on a school in Thitseint.

“There were no casualties in the second day’s airstrike, when a fighter jet bombed the school in Thitseint Village,” Ko Nagarlay said.

A junta flotilla set out on September 5, traveling downstream along the Ayeyarwady River from Bhamo Town in Kachin State toward Mandalay Region. As it passed through Katha, Shwegu, and Tigyaing townships in Kachin State and Sagaing Region, aircraft providing air cover for the flotilla bombed the riverbank villages along its route. The junta carried out these airstrikes on civilian areas despite the absence of any active clashes.

Some ships from the flotilla have returned to Mandalay City’s Gawain jetty, according to Ko Nagarlay. However, he warned that the threat of further airstrikes remains, as some ships are still en route.

With the ships still near the villages of Seinpankone, Shinla, and Zala in western Madaya Township, Mandalay Region, the Wetlet Informational Network has urged residents to remain extra vigilant against the risk of airstrikes.
