IDP students face educational roadblocks

Over 1000 IDP students from Mrauk-U Township cannot study regularly and facing difficulties with their education.

Local residents from Baung Dut village in Mrauk-U Township have been taking refuge in the Myo Thit monastery in Mrauk-U ancient city due to the fighting near their village; which has forced the village school to close.

About 900 students from Baung Dut village have to go to Aung Mingala post primary school and No. 2 Basic High School in Myo Thit ward in Mrauk-U, from 6 to 10 a.m.

“IDP students cannot study regularly like other students. They have shorter class time so they cannot complete the curriculum on time. This could cause them trouble in the future” said U Sein Hla Maung, manager of the Myo Thit IDP camp.

IDP students have also go to school early, is not convenient for the students, their parents said.

“They have to prepare to go to school at 5a.m. It is difficult for them to wake up early,” said Daw Yee Chay, a student’s mother. She added that she could not give pocket money to her son because her husband can earn about MMK5000 a day.

IDP students said that they want to study from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. like other students.

The education officer in Mrauk-U Township said that the department has arranged for IDP students to go to the nearest schools and more teachers would teach IDP students.
