Food Poisoning Hits Family of Five in Myawaddy

A family of five in Myawaddy Township, Karen State, has suffered food poisoning after consuming suspected Chinese waste materials, according to local sources.

The incident occurred on April 19 in Inkyin Myaing village, when the family reportedly picked up a salt-like package with Chinese labeling from an abandoned building near Mae Htaw Thalay village, previously occupied by Chinese nationals. After bringing it home, they used the substance while cooking pork dishes and later consumed the meal.

“They said it was collected from an old Chinese site. The substance looked like iodized salt. They used it while cooking pork and ate lunch around 12:30 p.m. By about 3 p.m., symptoms started,” said a local resident close to a social rescue team.

All five family members began experiencing symptoms including stomach pain, dizziness, and vomiting. They were transported by a rescue team to Myawaddy District General Hospital, where they are still receiving treatment.

A similar incident occurred on March 15, when two children died after a family in Ward No. 3, Myawaddy, consumed a salt-like substance labeled sodium nitrate that had also been collected from a former Chinese settlement.

Local residents are now raising concerns that discarded materials from such sites may continue to pose health risks. They have urged authorities to inspect and properly clear these areas to prevent further incidents.

“Authorities should also inspect food production and distribution sites. If such substances are mistakenly used in donations or shared meals, the consequences could be even more severe, including risks to monks receiving alms,” the resident added.

Health experts warn that food poisoning symptoms commonly include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Depending on the type of toxin consumed, the condition can be life-threatening, and immediate medical attention is strongly recommended.
