Around 2.5 million viss (around 4 million kg) of salt worth Ks 400 million have been destroyed in the salt warehouses in Pa Nga Village under Thanbyuzayat Township in the Mon State due to heavy rain on June 17 morning, according to the Mon State Minister of Agriculture and Livestock U Tun Htay.

He told Hinthar Media that the salt dissolved in the water after the water entered the salt warehouse.

“Salt was hoarded inside the salt warehouses. The water level rose unexpectedly so the salt became submerged. The salt warehouses have low [ceilings]. The business owners have been affected the most,” said the minister.

U Kyaw Lwin, manager of salt farm project in Pa Nga Village, said the salt price may rise in the market after salt from the warehouses including sun-dried salt have been destroyed by the flood.

“The price may rise due to low stock of hoarded stock but the price must not be higher than foreign salt. If it is higher, foreign salt will enter [the market],” he said.

Raw salt costs Ks 160 per viss and processed salt costs between Ks 200 and Ks 220 per viss at the moment.

Sun-dried salt production is operated in Paung, Bilin, Ye, and Thanbyuzayat townships in the Mon State and Pa Nga salt farm in Thanbyuzayat Township is the lead producer of salt.
