Some 50 people have been relocated after heavy rainfall caused multiple landslides in the Shan State capital of Taunggyi, beginning in early September.

The people, who come from nine households, were evacuated to a monastery on September 8, according to an officer from the Taunggyi Township General Administration Department (GAD).

GAD officer Phyo Min Hteik said that landslides occurred in Taunggyi on September 3 and again on September 8, and that the area affected is around 200 feet.

“Landslides occur in Taunggyi every year. Sometimes fences and sidwalks have collapsed,” he told SHAN. “The respective authorities, engineers and environmentalists are observing the situation on the ground.”

Authorities have reportedly warned people to stay on alert for more incidents, as rains continue.

A 17-year-old boy fell into a water canal and drowned on September 4 after heavy rainfall hit Taunggyi that day. A 60-year-old man was killed by wall collapsing in Taunggyi on August 18 because of flooding.
