Cyclone Mocha Victims in Matupi Township Still Waiting for Help to Arrive Chin State

Matupi Township residents reported that people currently grappling with food shortages resulting from damage done by Cyclone Mocha in Chin State on May 14th, urgently need assistance, and so far have not received any aid.

"The barns have been damaged, making our lives more challenging. We are unable to purchase zinc roofing and tarpaulins. Also the road closures further exacerbate our hardships, causing a multitude of difficulties,” said a resident of Matupi Township on May 20.

The Interim Chin National Consultative Council reported on May 18 that Cyclone "Mocha," an extremely powerful cyclone, struck Matupi Township in Chin State. The cyclone brought gusts between 50 and 70 miles per hour, resulting in damage to 887 homes as well as barns.

Military Council troops in Matupi Township, Chin State have shut down the internet and phone lines, makes it vastly more difficult to help and rescue people affected by the storm. The residents of Matupi are urging the prompt restoration of internet and phone services to facilitate relief efforts and communication in the area.

One of the aid workers mentioned that although the officials have been providing food supplies to the storm-affected individuals in Matupi ‘s urban area over the past few days, the villages in the same township have not yet received similar support.

One person helping the people affected by the storm said, "In urban Matupi township, rice, oil, and salt are being provided. However, the villages within the township have not yet received any support. Both international organizations and local charitable groups have not extended their assistance to these communities."

He also added that the strong winds from Cyclone Mocha caused severe damage to houses in Matupi Township, resulting in roofs being blown off. As a result, he appealed to international organizations and local charities to provide immediate help to those affected by both the storm and the ongoing conflict, including the people seeking refuge in the village.
