A sharp rise in chickenpox infections has been recorded in the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, with health authorities confirming more than 8,700 cases over the past three months, raising renewed public health concerns.
According to officials from the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC), a total of 8,769 cases were documented during this period—marking a significant increase compared to 1,355 cases reported in the final six months of the previous year.
Health experts attribute the surge to the camps’ high population density, inadequate sanitation infrastructure, and limited capacity for effective isolation. These conditions have created an environment conducive to the rapid transmission of infectious diseases, particularly among children.
Dr. Toha Bhuiyan, Health Coordinator at the RRRC, noted that while chickenpox cases are rising, other communicable diseases such as measles and rubella remain largely under control due to sustained vaccination efforts.
“Routine immunisation programmes for children in the camps are continuing as scheduled,” he said. “Seasonal factors often contribute to an increase in such infections, although the overall mortality risk associated with chickenpox remains low.”
Camp residents, however, describe mounting challenges in managing the outbreak within overcrowded shelters.
“My son suddenly developed a rash followed by fever. We are trying to isolate him, but it is extremely difficult since our entire family lives in a single room,” said Nurjahan, a resident of Kutupalong camp.
Another parent, Mohammad Idris, echoed similar concerns, stating, “Once one person becomes infected, others quickly follow. Managing children in these conditions is becoming increasingly difficult.”
Humanitarian officials warn that without improved hygiene measures, enhanced awareness, and targeted public health interventions, the spread of chickenpox could continue to accelerate across the camps.
