In Hinthada Township of the Ayeyarwady Region, the Military Council has apprehended a schoolteacher along with five individuals, accusing them of terrorism charges. The teacher had actively joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) in opposition to the coup.
"It was a horrific incident, with civilians being subjected to brutal beatings and arbitrary arrests, followed by charges filed against them under the pretext of terrorism and politically motivated offenses," a source said.
On June 22nd, soldiers infiltrated Natmaw village in Hinthada Township and arrested Daw New Nwe Oo, a 26-year-old teacher actively participating in CDM. At the same time U Kyaw,
a 58-year-old resident of Kinetawkwin village and member of the National League for Democracy (NLD), was also apprehended. Two days later the cases were filed against them at the local police station.
Separately, on June 23rd, Military Council troops apprehended and subsequently charged a group of individuals. Among them were two 25-year-old men residing in Theinkone village, as well as two men aged 25 and 22, who were living in Kunchankone village.
"The detainees, despite their cases being opened at the police station, have not been transferred there, and the Military Council is currently handling their interrogation. If the soldiers deem the investigation to be sufficient, they will subsequently hand over the detainees to the police for further processing”, a source close to these arrests told NMG.
Military Council troops alongside subordinate Pyu-Saw-Htee militia members, established cordons around the targeted villages, and apprehended the suspects. During the course of the arrests, incidents of physical violence occurred, resulting in injuries sustained by some of the detainees.
Concerns have arisen among family members as the individuals who were arrested continue to undergo questioning at the 18th Light Infantry Division, a situation that has persisted until June 28th.
Following the dissemination of news on social media regarding the National Unity Government (NUG) expanding its operations in the Ayeyarwady Region, the coup regime has implemented stricter security measures in the area. Reports from local sources suggest a disturbing trend of escalating brutality accompanying rrests, with an increase in incidents where soldiers are allegedly extorting money from the detained individuals.
Military Council troops are carrying out regular search and clearance operations in the forested areas surrounding several townships. These include Lemyethna, Kyangin, Myanaung, Ingapu in Hinthada Province, Yegyi and Ngathaingchaung in Kyonpyaw Province, as well as Pathein, Chaungthar, Thabaung, and Ngapudaw in Pathein Province. These regions are interconnected with the Western Yoma Mountain Range.
