A case has been filed over the apparent abduction of three candidates from the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) allegedly by members of the Arakan Army (AA).
The three NLD candidates are: Former Arakan State Development Affairs Minister U Min Aung, Lower House candidate Daw Ni Ni May Myint and Upper House candidate Daw Chit Chit Chaw who were abducted by an armed group while on a canvassing trip on their way to Phaungkhar village in Taunggup Township on October 14h.
U Tin Thein Aung, Chair of the Taunggup Township NLD said “I don’t know which
organizations abducted them. I have lodged a complaint to the relevant police station. The situation is worrying.” He added that the armed group did not abduct three other NLD members who accompanied the detained candidates.
Police Major U Than Naing said: “The police are making an investigation into the case. Currently, the detainees are not in the territorial area of Taunggup Township. They were taken to another township. Charges have been filed against the AA under a section of the Anti-Terrorism Law.
The facts are still sketchy, and the news agency is unable to confirm the abduction of candidates as any interview with the AA is banned under the law.
