A Grade 12 student in Ramree Township, Arakan (Rakhine) State, died by suicide after enduring severe psychological trauma following an attempted rape at her home, local residents and humanitarian networks reported Monday.
The 17-year-old girl was heavily traumatized after the ordeal at her home in Ward 5, Laytaung Town, Ramree Township, around 2:00 a.m. on June 3.
During the incident, a displaced married man from Thandwe Township, who had taken refuge in Laytaung, covertly broke into the girl’s home and entered her mosquito net with the intent to assault her. The victim fought back, sparking a violent struggle that ultimately forced the perpetrator to abandon the attack. As he fled, he left behind his longyi, a traditional ankle-length garment commonly worn in Myanmar.
The victim’s family and neighbors preserved the garment as evidence and filed a complaint with the Department of Law Enforcement and Public Security (DLEPS), the police force under the United League of Arakan (ULA), the political wing of the Arakan Army (AA). Ramree Township is currently under AA control.
DLEPS authorities detained and questioned the suspect under Section 456 of the Penal Code, which covers lurking house trespass by night. The girl died by suicide on June 14.
She had always been known as a shy and reserved person, and following the assault, she rarely left her home, according to locals.
“She was overwhelmed with intense insecurity, and after the attack she never left her home again. And then, she hanged herself,” a local told DMG.
Neighbors described the teenager as naturally introverted, adding that she appeared to suffer severe trauma in the aftermath of the incident.
"She was still a minor and a student, and she had always been very shy. The repeated police questioning, combined with the painful realization that the whole township knew about the assault, likely broke her mentally,” another resident said.
The suspect remains in custody, while prosecutors are considering amending the charges following the victim’s death.
Critics said effective action remains insufficient despite frequent reports of child rape cases in Arakan State.
Data collected by DMG show that at least 15 verified cases of sexual assault and rape were recorded across Arakan State between June 2024 and April 2026.
