Artillery shell lands on house killing one, injuring another

An artillery shell landed on a house in Minbya town on the night of 19 August, one man was killed and a woman was injured.

 

The incident occurred at about 10 p.m. Sergeant Hla Tun from No. 537 Regiment in Rathedaung Township was killed and his wife was hit by a piece of shrapnel and sent to hospital.

 

“A man from a house on Sin Gyi Pyin road was killed by an artillery shell. His wife has been undergoing medical treatment at Minbya hospital,” said U Hla Thein Aung, Arakan State MP for Minbya Township.

 

The sergeant arrived in Minbya town for a visit during his leave. Eight people were in the house when an artillery shell launched from Mt. Kyein Taung landed on the house, family members said.

 

Landmine explosions occurred between Tagundaing and Kalama Taung villages in Minbya Township on 20 August, a local resident from Kalama Taung village said.

“We heard the sound of gunfire and explosions. We are afraid of going outside the village, and we did not know exactly what happened,” the villager said.

 

Colonel Win Zaw Oo, head of the Western Command, said yesterday morning that he had not known about the explosion in Minbya Township.
