Airstrike in Mawchi Leaves 32 Dead, Including Unidentified Body Parts

On August 17, a military junta airstrike on Mawchi, Hpasaung Township, Karenni State, killed as many as 32 civilians, according to U Ba Nyar, Secretary (2) of the Interim Executive Council (IEC) of Karenni State.

Among the 32 victims, six were unidentified bodies, some of which were torn into pieces by the bombing, making it impossible to confirm their identities. Authorities are continuing to investigate.

“Of the dead, there were 18 men, 8 women, and 6 unidentified bodies, with a total of 32,” U Ba Nyar stated.

The military carried out two separate airstrikes on the same day, targeting the township hospital at around 7:45 a.m., and again the 16 hill (local name) area at around 12 p.m.

In addition to the fatalities, several people were injured and are now receiving medical treatment.

Although there was no active fighting in Mawchi, the military junta has conducted 11 airstrikes there since the beginning of 2025. On August 18, the IEC urged the international community, including the United Nations and ASEAN, to take effective action against these war crimes committed by the junta.
