The 7th annual ceremony launches on suspending of the Myitsone Dam

In commemoration of the 7th annual on suspending of the Myitsone Dam, a prayer ceremony was held at Tanghpre village in Myitsone Dam area on October 1. The memorial service was organized under the title of “The time has arisen” and the governmental departments, multi-parties, Irrawaddy Friendship Network, several religious organizations and around 1,500 local residents attended.

“Will the Government pay attention to the Chinese company or concentrate toward our native people’s voice? In other words, does the government want to see prosperity of the Chinese companies  or dead bodies of the locals alongside the river? It’s time to decide. In addition, will the SPIC Company continue trying the Myitsone Dam project by subsidizing rice? Anyhow, we’ll totally oppose supporting to build the dam project. If the protest didn’t get success during our time, our ancestral blood relatives will carry on the protest against the dam project. For that reason, it’s time for the Chinese companies to retreat the venture. On the side of the native residents, they’ve to ponder allowing the dam project and face fatal consequences. Otherwise, to oppose the dam project up to the last breathe. It’s time to decide fighting the dam project in a deadly way,” Slg. Lashi Awng Lat, a local resident, spoke out during the ceremony.

Although the State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) persuades the local residents by giving reliefs aides, the dam project will not be permissible, according to him.

The local people expressed their disapproval of the dam project by shouting anti-dam slogans during the 7th annual of suspending the Myitsone Dam.
