Six newly elected candidates from the All Mon Regions Democracy Party (AMDP) will travel to Naypyidaw, the new capital of Burma, to participate in the new Burmese parliament, according to party leaders.
Nai Ngwe Thein, Chairman of the AMDP said, “They (the junta) will hold a meeting on 27 January to form the new government. They told our candidates to arrive at Naypyidaw Jan 24. Our candidates will leave from Moulmein on 19 January.”
The six candidates include Nai Hla Maung, Nai Thein Aung, Mi Myint Than, Nai Kyaw Thei, Nai Tun Own, and Dr. Banya Aung Moe. Three candidates won seats in the People’s Parliament and three in the National Parliament.
“We have a lot to discuss at parliament,” said Nai Ngwe Thein.
The AMDP won 16 seats in Mon State in the November 7 election, after running a total of 34 candidates. Party leaders said many of their candidates lost due to rigged advance voting.
The AMDP become the main opposition party of the regime-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), in Mon State. The party won seven seats in the State Parliament, while the USDP won 14 seats. The National Unity Party won two seats.
Many of the elected AMDP candidates are civil servants, and this is their first experience with politics.
