Thuta Linn — Voters have been lined up outside polling stations since 5 am in Citapu Ward; Kachin State capital Myitkyina. Things were busy as soon as Polling Station No 15 opened. BNI Election Newsroom was on hand to report on the experiences from some who voted and those that are still waiting.

Daw Lu Lu – Age (40); Employment – market merchant
I got up at 5:30 am and just finishing voted. I just hope everything turns out well.

Daw Htu Nuu – Age (53); Employment – general worker
I have been waiting in line since 6 am. As we’re already suffered many hardships (in Myanmar), I hope my vote can improve the situation. I don’t know what changes will happen after voting; I’m still confused about whether the political situation will become more complicated or get better. I think the previous government was unfair.

Ko Arkar Htet Kyaw Oo – Age (26); Employment - Lapidist
As far as I have seen, there are many people waiting to vote. I’ve been standing in line since 5:30 am and don’t think there will be enough time for everyone to vote. The polling station opened five minutes late. Voting takes time; we first must sign in before getting a ballot, and I’m worried there won’t be enough time. But, it will be better if there’s change; we have faced so many economic hardships. I moved from Pyin Oo Lwin to Myitkyina over a year ago and business isn’t going well. I’m also concerned with problems related to polling stations and ballots.

Daw Khet Par Nuu – Age (54); Employment – unknown; sibling of U Khet Htein Nan; chairman of Unity and Democracy Party for Kachin State
I believe there will be change and feel excited when I see many people lined up to vote. We have higher expectations and expect there will be more people suitable to lead for our area and country.
