Mon politicians from the three main political parties will meet for an upcoming seminar from Sept. 28 – 30 in preparation for the Mon National Conference. The conference - the seventh one to take place - will focus on establishing a unanimous approach to state and nation-wide changes poised to occur in Myanmar over the coming years. Past sessions were led by the New Mon State Party (NMSP) and the Mon Affair Union (MAU).
This year's conference is the first time representatives from the Mon Democracy Party (MDP), All Mon Region Democracy Party (AMRDP) and the NMSP, have jointly hosted a political forum. The organizing committee will also include Buddhist monks and members of civil society organizations.
Dr. Min Kyi Win, chairman of the seminar’s organizing committee, described the event that will happen before the end of the year as a way to help ensure unification and solidarity across Mon State in preparation for the 2015 general elections.
“Mon people want to see the two Mon political parties, MDP and AMRDP form into one party, which we will also discuss,” according to Min Kyi Win.
“The seminar is especially important as we approach the 2015 general elections, the government’s national reconciliation conference, and as pressure increases in favor of reforming the 2008 constitution… We want to get the opinions of all Mon people on these issues” said Nai Tin Aung, vice chairman of MDP.
Although the seminar that will attended by about 400 has not been officially approved by the Mon State government, committee officials are confident they will get the green light.
