Fifty representatives from 8 division and states attended the meeting at Nikal Monastery in Yangon to decide on the new chairman, and also discuss urgent issues related to labor and establishing registered unions in the country.

AFFM wants to help labor groups officially register unions on regional and national levels within the following year. The independent organization that is a member of International Union of Food and Allied Workers (IUF) plans to work closely with international labor unions. This was their first central committee meeting after their formation on Aug.26 following a new labor law enacted earlier this year.

Representatives from Myanmar Industrial Trade Union (MITU), Private Teacher Union (PTU) and the Journalist Press and Publication Workers' Union (JPPWU) spoke at the meeting, according to AFFM’s Vice-Chairman Saw Thein Kyi.
