The Karen National Union (KNU) will hold an emergency central committee meeting in KNU’s Brigade -7 headquarters, on October 22nd, according to Pado Aung Maung Aye, who is chairman of Hpa-an District and KNU committee member.

“We will first have a non-formal reconciliation meeting, after we will re-gather for our central committee meeting.”

During the meeting the KNU will discuss the opening of KNU’s liaison office in Hpa-an, which became a controversial issue, creating considerable tension between representatives of the general staff and central general secretaries, last September.

KNLA’s Chief of Staff, General Mu Htu Shay Poe, Vice Secretary Saw David Taw and Officer in Charge of the Relief and Social Services Department Pado Rol Jer Khin, were expelled from the organization shortly after the liaison office was opened.

Saw David Taw recently died from lung cancer.

During the meeting, the KNU will nominate people to fill the vacant positions, and discuss plans for the 15th Anniversary Congress – when they will vote.

Currently, there are 30 central committee members, 15 standing committee members and 11 central executive committee members.
