Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, 77-year-old civilian leader, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for 12 counts of unjust prosecution by the military council.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her advisor, Mr. Sean Turnell, were each sentenced to three years in prison on September 29, bringing her total sentence of 23 years in prison.

On September 30, the Nay Pyi Taw Prison Court sentenced her to a further three years in prison under Section 3 (1-c) of the Secrets Act, and the French Embassy in Myanmar strongly denounced the Military Council's unfair practice.

The statement states that the military council's ruling is contrary to the calls and negotiations of the international community to make the rule of law more effective in Myanmar.

The statement called for the immediate release of all those who have been unjustly arrested, including civilian leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint.

A political analyst said that the injustice of the military council is obvious by looking at Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's many cases and such long prison sentences.

A spokesman for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the confiscation of justice by military tribunals was a serious violation of fundamental rights and further undermined the rule of law.

Currently, Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for a total of 12 counts, including the most recent one, and is still facing the remaining seven corruption charges.
