United Nations Save the Children Myanmar issued a statement on September 20 to express their strongest objection to the death and arrest of students due to an attack on a school in Lat Yat Kone Village in Tabayin Township, Sagaing Region.
On September 16, 11 children were killed and 17 others injured in an air raid launched by the Military Council troops which targeted a school.
“The heads of governments from around the world meet in New York this week for the UN General Assembly. They must condemn this attack and do everything in their power to hold perpetrators of such crimes to account”, Hassan Noor Saadi, the Asia Regional Director of Save the Children said in the statement.
The statement also demands to respect international humanitarian laws, cease all forms of violence and avoid targeting children and schools.
The statement recommends the United Nations Security Council to convene an emergency meeting to discuss Myanmar issues. In addition, it requests to make a resolution to protect the rights of children in Myanmar, including their right to a safe education.
Save the Children faces some criticisms from democracy advocates because their statement did not include the name of the organization who perpetrated the attack.
UNICEF also attracted similar criticisms from the public because their statement released on September 19 failed to mention the real culprits of the attack too.
