The UN Special Envoy of the Secretary-General Noeleen Heyzer is travelling today to Myanmar, according to a press release from the UN Secretary General’s office.

Following the latest call from the Security Council for an immediate cessation of all forms of violence and unimpeded humanitarian access to all those in need, she will focus on addressing the deteriorating situation and immediate concerns as well as other priority areas of her mandate.

The Special Envoy’s visit follows her extensive consultations with actors from across the political spectrum, civil society as well as communities affected by the ongoing conflict, the press release says.

It is unclear whether the UN envoy will meet with the Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing or the country’s imprisoned former leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, a longtime UN demand.

On Monday, Ang San Suu Kyi was convicted on more corruption charges, adding six years to her earlier 11-year prison sentence. The charges are reportedly linked to the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation, according to a report in Spring Revolution News.
