KNU says IDPs are in desperate need of humanitarian aid

The Karen National Union (KNU) warned that IDPs in hard-to-reach locations under four KNU-controlled brigades are in desperate need of humanitarian supplies.

As the junta army and the Border Guard Force (BGF) are constantly conducting military operations for control of the area in KNU’s Kawthoolei area, KNLA/ KNDO coalition forces clashed with them daily, the statement said.

To control the area, the military council has used mortars and airstrikes, causing many locals to flee their homes.

Fighting is currently raging in Thaton District Brigade 1, Nyaung Lay Pin District Brigade 3, Myeik and Dawei District Brigade 4, Muhtaw District Brigade 5, and Dooplaya District Brigade 6, and the demand for health, food, and shelter for refugees is growing as the rainy season approaches.

The KNU stated that humanitarian aid is especially needed in hard-to-reach locations inside the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Brigades.

The regime forces continue to carry out offensives and reckless shootings, leaving the situation extremely difficult for IDPs, Saw Nanda Su, a spokesperson for the Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG), said.

More than 170,000 people have been displaced by fighting in KNU-controlled areas.

Humanitarian aid, such as shelters, purified drinking water, medicine, and food, is required for the time being.
