At least 10 political prisoners, including Tanintharyi Region’s Prime Minister U Myint Maung, were kept in solitary confinement in Dawei Prison, according to sources close to the prison.

They are held in solitary confinement by prison authorities because of alleged political activities in prison and opposition to the military council during the trial.

There are 11 detainees, including Tanintharyi Prime Minister U Myint Maung, who was sentenced to many years in prison; Ko Htun Oo, a political activist; Ko Yazar Htun and Ko Min Sett Hmu, a source close to the prison said.

Some political prisoners at Dawei Prison went on hunger strike in recent months.

In Tanintharyi Region, the junta sentenced more than 200 political prisoners to long prison terms, and the remaining not less than 800 political prisoners are still being investigated.
