Political analyst predict election will result in coalition government

Mon political analyst, Nai Banyar Gagyawgi, predicts that the powerful parties will not win in the upcoming general election.  He predicts that a coalition government will be the outcome of the election.

“The NLD will not win anymore. Similarly, the USDP cannot form a government. So, a coalition government will be formed that includes the ethnic parties,”  he suggests.

According to the Nai Banyar Gagawgi, the ethnic parties have no trust in the NLD due to failures to deliver any benefits from the peace process.

“In the 2010 and 2015 general elections, one dominant party formed the government. But they were unable to establish peace and ethnic rights,” said Naing Aung Za Na, Chair of the Mon Writers’ Association.

Efforts to build a peaceful union have not yet materialized in many parts of the country.

Naing Aung Za Na continued “if the ethnics cast their voters for their ethnic candidates, these states will have more representatives. They will perform more duties for the state and we will see progress.”

Analysts and political commentators suggest that  ethnic parties need to consolidate and cooperate in order to bring about real change.

The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) has said it has no plan to form a coalition government after the 2020 General Election.

The Mon Unity Party will run for 35 out of 45 constituencies in Mon State. The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), and the United Democratic Party (UDP) will compete in all constituencies.

A total of 302 candidates from 17 political parties and independent candidates have registered to run for the seats in the November 8, 2020 election.
