Flight tests began at the Surbung Airport in Chin State’s Falam Township last week, construction of which is nearly complete.

A spokesperson for the Chin State government Soe Htet said that while airplanes have not yet landed on the runway, they flew between 1,500 and 800 feet over the ground from June 25 until June 27.

“The communication system was tested. The wind speed was tested,” he said. “The aircraft flew over the airport from north to south and south to north.”

A BEEK-2990 aircraft was used in the Surbung Airport flight test.

According to Soe Htet, airplanes will only be able to land at the airport after the flight test report has been released.

The Surbung Airport is the first airport to be constructed in Chin State and was started during the 2015-2016 fiscal year. The estimated cost for the airport’s construction is 34 billion kyats (US$24.6 million).

It is 6,000 feet above sea level, with a capacity for ATR 72 aircraft to be able to land at the Surbung airport.
