President Office spokesman Zaw Htay said that they would take stern action in accordance with the law if the U Wirathu sedition case affects peace and tranquillity.

Yangon Region, West District General Administration Department (GAD) filed a case against abbot U Wirathu under section 124(a) of Penal Code (sedition) on May 28 at West District court for his speech delivered at mass rally held at Maha Bandoola Square car parking, Kyauktada Township, Yangon for safeguarding article 59(f) and amending article 261 of 2008 constitution.

Some monks and supporters held prayer offering ceremonies in Yangon and Mandalay for U Wirathu on May 30 and 31.

“There were prayer-offering ceremonies yesterday. We know about them. We are considering many ways to handle these actions by administrative bodies and security agencies,” spokesman Zaw Htay said.

He continued, “We will work in accordance with maintaining law and order. We cannot compromise on this issue. We shall take stern action in accordance with the law if these actions affect the peace and tranquillity in the nation,”
