No children were hurt, but villagers in the northern Shan State community have since fled.

Stray bullets from clashes between the Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army and members of the Northern Alliance of ethnic armed groups have been found in a northern Shan State monastery.

Zayya Thukha monastery, in Kyaukme Township’s Nawng Piang Oun village, was hosting a Shan language summer course for 100 children, which began on Friday—the same day that fighting broke out near the community at around 11:00 a.m.

“We were lucky. No children got hurt… After we heard sound of gunshots, bullets landed on the ground of the monastery,” a Nawng Piang Oun resident told SHAN. “Both the abbot and villagers were so upset.”

The individual added that the community members had fled to nearby towns, but it was unknown where they were taking refuge at the time of reporting.

“Currently, there is nobody left in our village,” the resident said.

Kywe Kon village tract, where Nawng Piang Oun is located, is around two miles east of Kyaukme town and near the road toward Mandalay.
