Landmine Explosion Injures Farmer

Landmines claim new victims in northern Shan State.

A woman was rushed to the hospital after stepping on a landmine while picking tea leaves in northern Shan State.

Daw Thein Mya, 55, was taken by civil society group, Ziwita-Dana, for medical assistance in Kyaukme town, located about 10 miles from where the accident took place, near the village of Namtwe.

“Her right leg is injured and it’s very serious. We don’t know whether it will be amputated,” said U Tin Maung Thein, who works for Ziwita-Dana.

Last month, a woman was killed by a landmine. Another was injured near Khon Nguen in Kyaukme Township.

There are several armed groups active in the area that frequently clash with each other and the Myanmar Army. It’s unknown which of the groups are responsible for planting the landmines that killed the woman and injured the others.
