China’s SPIC campaigns to restart Myitsone dam

Chinese government-owned State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) held a briefing in Nawng Kyaing Village in Waingmaw Township on August 24 with the aim to restart Myitsone dam project.

Daw Nang Ja, who participated in the discussion, told K.N.G that the SPIC held a briefing on dams in order to restart Myitsone project.

“I asked them whether they were holding the discussion in order to restart Myitsone dam project. They said yes,” she said.

The CPIC attempted to draw interest from the local residents by explaining to them about how other countries across the world have become developed due to hydropower and the development in the Kachin State before and after Chipwi hydropower project and how hydropower has contributed in the development of Myitkyina and Waingmaw towns.

Daw Roi Ja said the company told the local residents not to worry about the potential disadvantages of Myitsone dam project.

“When we told them about our objection against the dam in Myitsone, they explained to us. They said the dam will be constructed by world experts and they will build a wall that is thicker than a mountain to contain the water. They said there’s nothing to be worried about,” she said.

Local residents, however, refused to accept the dam project no matter how strong the wall will be built for the dam in Myitsone area since the soil in their area is loose soil.
