Over half of the flood-hit schools reopen

A total of 251 schools have been reopened now after many schools were closed due to the flooding in the Karen (Kayin) State, U Saw Myo Htet from the State Education Office said to KIC News on August 6.

“Schools have been reopened as it’s convenient for the children to travel. Some schools can’t be reopened so far. Although those schools have reappeared, water hasn’t been flowed out yet. So we don’t allow the children to go there. The children are still facing troubles for going to schools,” he said.

Schools have been closed down for over a week in Hlaingbwe, Hpa-an, Kawkareik, Kyainseikgyi, Hpapun, and Myawaddy townships in the Karen State as a result of the flooding and they have only been reopened recently.

A total of 464 schools were closed down in the Karen State due to heavy rain since July and 213 schools need to be reopened, according to statistics received by the State Education Office.
