The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic issued a statement yesterday calling Myanmar’s elections “a historic milestone.”

It also noted that, “the elections were conducted in [a] calm, peaceful and relatively free manner. Major credit goes to the Burmese voters and their massive turnout that has clearly demonstrated their desire to fully use the opportunity to freely express their will after a quarter of a century.”

It continues, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs appeals to all the interested parties to make sure that the vote counting, announcement of results and all other post-election steps are taken in accordance with the basic principles of parliamentary democracy and national unity and reconciliation.”

And concludes, “The Czech Republic stands ready to continue to support in concrete ways democratization and reform processes in Myanmar/Burma and assist in fulfilling democratic ambitions of the peoples of Myanmar/Burma.”
