Mon State’s new university offers Diploma in Buddhism

Ramannyarattha Buddhism University, a new university in Mon State, started offering its Diploma in Buddhism.

The program started on July 24, at the university in Myaingtharyar Quarter, Mawlamyine capital of Mon State, formerly known as Moulmein.

“Here, we will add one more subject, the Abhidhama, which will be at international level. The students (monks), who want to study the Diploma in Buddhism, must at least complete a high standard of Rehmonnya Dhammasariya or government at level,” said Sayardaw Parlaramonnya, chairman of the organizing committee at the university.

Priority is given to monks and nuns, with laypersons also accepted. The applicants must meet the course pre-requisites, but if they fail they will be provided with 4 months of English classes.

“If the students pass this year, we will offer them the diploma. Over the next two years, if we have enough students, we will start the bachelor program. However, if the students want to study in Thailand, we have partnered with three Thai universities. They are also welcoming new students from us,” said Ashin Khemasara, of Ramannyanrattha Buddhism University.

The Ramannyanrattha Buddhism University is already recognized by 21 Buddhist universities in the country [Burma], and the students completing the Diploma course at the University are able to continue their bachelor studies at those 21 universities across Burma.

Under the leadership of Ashin Thilasara, a well-known Dhamma lecturer, and members of Ramonnya Dhammasariya Mon Sangha Association, the establishment of Ramannyarattha Buddhism University started in May, 2012 and is currently in operation.
