Training For Youth Elevates Mind And Spirit

A group aims to raise awareness and self-esteem of youth in Karen State with training that provides them with the skills and abilities they need to make positive changes in their own communities.

Hpa-an-based Education Gathering Group (EGG) has been teaching youth leadership skills, environmental conservation, gender equality and community development since 2012.

EGG trainer Saw Eh Phaung said: “Youths have many qualifications but they are afraid to speak. We have raised awareness on social skills, environmental conservation, and recycling.”

Nan Soe Yamin Mon, who attended recent training in Kyon Kha Wun Village, said:  “I have learned about the natural environment, the negative effects of plastics and how to use recycled water bottles for planting. I feel more confident about speaking in front of people after being taught social skills.”

Since establishing an academy in Hpa-an in 2012 by alumni students, religious leaders and civil society groups, the EGG has provided training for over one-hundred youth.
