A proposal to extend Mon language teaching in primary-level basic education schools across Mon State up to Grade 5 was submitted on the first day of the parliament session on June 9 by U San Tin, a representative of Paung Township Constituency No. 2.

Supporters of the proposal said teaching the Mon language only up to Grade 3 is not sufficient for students to become fully proficient. They argued that extending the program to Grade 5 would help students learn the language more effectively.

The proposal was supported by U Kyaw Zeya Min, chairperson of the Ethnic Affairs Committee and a representative from Bilin Township Constituency No. 2.

“Teaching Mon language up to Grade 5 would help students achieve better language skills and support the preservation of Mon language and culture,” U Kyaw Zeya Min said.

The proposal will be discussed further on the third day of the parliament session. If approved, Mon language classes in primary schools would be extended to Grade 5.

At present, Mon language is taught only up to Grade 3 in basic education primary schools. Mon language teachers say this is not enough for students to develop strong language skills.
