Junta conducts airstrikes in Chin State using internationally banned cluster munitions

Women’s for Justice (WJ) reported on May 19 that the junta had launched a series of airstrikes in Chin State using internationally banned cluster munitions, resulting in high number of deaths and injuries and triggering widespread fear and panic among local communities.

In April, junta airstrikes in Chin State and neighboring Sagaing Region killed 16 civilians and injured 27 others. Separately, 2 civilians were shot dead by junta troops, while around 190 buildings—including religious structures—were damaged in the attacks, according to WJ.

Recently, the junta has intensified its airstrikes in Chin State and Sagaing Region, with an increasing number of attacks directly targeting villages.

In addition, the junta’s ground offensives have also impacted residents of Matupi, Falam, Mindat, and Kanpetlet townships in Chin State, forcing more than 40,000 people to flee and seek refuge near the Indian border. The displaced are in urgent need of basic food and medical assistance.

WJ is an organization that documents reports and conducts research in Chin State and Sagaing Region. It also provides psychological counseling and support to women who are victims of violence and human rights violations.
