Mizoram government insists on good ties with the AA

Maung Sar Ga — Mizoram  chief minister Mr Lalduhoma, recently presented a report on the relation with the Arakan Army (AA) during an assembly discussion in Aizawl and commented that Mizoram government in far eastern India has a good relationship with the AA in Rakhine State of western Myanmar.

The assembly session on 11 March 2026 also discussed the AA’s control over Paletwa, Kyauktaw and Ponnagyun townships since 2024 and subsequent influx of Myanmarese people to Mizoram’s  Lawngtlai district.

Lalduhoma assured that the State police,  district administration with support from  Assam Rifles, Border Security Force and civil society organizations will manage the menace in a collaborative manner.

It may be mentioned that the  Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP), a joint initiative between India and Myanmar, was a topic of serious discussion in the assembly. According to All India Radio, the ambitious project aims to connect Mizoram  with the capital region of Rakhine State and Sittwe port through Paletwa, Kyauktaw and Ponnagyun townships.

Launched in  2008, the project  involves the upgrading of Sittwe and Paletwa ports and constructing a road from Paletwa to Mizoram border. With a budget of Indian Rs 5,000 crore ($ 582.5 million), it integrates sea, river and land routes to connect Sittwe with Kolkata via Mizoram.

Upon completion and commissioned, the project is aimed to  create new trade opportunities and connectivity for the north-eastern people. Goods from Kolkata can be transported to Sittwe and then exported to the destination including Teknaf port in Bangladesh.

Indian ports, shipping and waterways minister Sarbananda Sonowal stated on 7 July  2025 that the Kaladan riverine project is expected to be fully operational by  2027.

A Rakhine politician, choosing to remain anonymous, expressed that a Mizoram chief minister’s acknowledgment of good relations with the AA in an assembly discussion should be termed as a positive outcome and a kind of recognition almost like a provincial government.
