Ethnic communities come together in AA-controlled areas through cultural exchange

Cultural exchange forums fostering social harmony among Arakan (Rakhine) State’s diverse ethnic communities recently took place in areas under Arakan Army (AA) control.

According to organizers and participants, these forums have taken place in Kyauktaw and Buthidaung townships since February. The Kyauktaw forum was held on February 17, while Buthidaung hosted its event on March 6.

“The events are led by the Kant Kaw Social Development Association. Building understanding between different ethnic groups is key for rebuilding Arakan State. We need to expand these social harmony initiatives and make sure every ethnic group in the region can participate,” Ko Pan Kyaw Du, an ethnic Thet from Maungdaw Township told DMG.

He added that last year, the Mro Youth Association (MYU), together with other ethnic groups, held similar forums in Maungdaw District.

The Kyauktaw event brought together Arakanese and Muslim youths, while the Buthidaung forum attracted a wider mix, including Arakanese, Mro, Chakma, Khami, Thet, and Muslim communities.

Participants emphasized that building social harmony in Arakan State relies on constructive dialogue and the friendly sharing of each group’s traditions and cultures.

“In Kyauktaw, we often hold exchange programs featuring traditional customs, culture, literature, and food. But because of the danger of junta airstrikes, these events usually have to be small and secretive. I hope in the future we’ll see more opportunities for all ethnic groups including the Muslim community to play a role in rebuilding Arakan State,” said a 26-year-old Muslim man from Kyauktaw Township.

The forums included traditional dance performances, presentations on customs and practices, and exhibitions of ethnic cuisines. Young Muslim participants noted that these programs have contributed to improving relations among the Arakan State’s various ethnic groups.
