Revolutionary forces operating in Kyaikmaraw Township, Mon State, have temporarily withdrawn from their positions after military junta troops advanced into resistance-held areas, according to local residents.

Residents said the junta launched a large-scale military operation on October 26, moving from the Taranar village tract toward Kawtdun and Kawtpanaw, and reaching the Katonsi village tract, where they have established several military bases.

The Ramonnya Mon Army (RMA) and the Lion Battalion Commando, led by Major Saw El Zewar, had been active in the area but reportedly withdrew to nearby villages following the junta’s incursion.

“As of now, junta troops have reached Katonsi and Shwewarchaung villages. They are stationed inside monasteries and civilians’ houses, while revolutionary forces remain outside the villages. No clashes have occurred yet,” said a resident of Ahhlatkone village.

Junta forces have also retaken control of the Mawlamyine Cement Limited (MCL) factory near Katonsi village and turned it into a military base, locals said.

Residents reported that security in the township has tightened, with night curfews, house raids, arbitrary arrests, and beatings taking place. Many villagers are too afraid to leave their homes as more than a hundred junta troops continue to patrol the area.

“People rarely go outside now. Soldiers are everywhere. They imposed a night travel ban recently and even beat some villagers. Many are also afraid of being forced into military service or election-related duties,” said another resident.

Since October 26, more than 200 junta soldiers have entered Kyaikmaraw Township, reportedly to “secure the area” ahead of the upcoming election. They have also dismantled security gates previously set up by revolutionary forces.

A brief clash occurred the same day around 3 p.m. between the Ramonnya Mon Army and junta troops near Ahhlatkone village, after which the RMA retreated to nearby areas.
