Junta airstrikes on two Karenni State townships where there was no current fighting, Bawlakhe and Demoso, killed six people and injured a further 10, on 14 July 2025.
At around 2:00 pm on 14 July, junta aircraft dropped two 200-pound bombs on Mawchi Town in Bawlakhe Township. One fell on a residential area killing six civilians and injuring ten others, three of whom are in a serious condition. The other bomb hit an empty road and caused no casualties.
This was the eighth airstrike on Mawchi Town since the beginning of 2025.
A rescue worker from Mawchi Town said: “So far, we know that five women and one man have died. We've also heard that ten people were injured, but we can't confirm these numbers yet. We'll be able to provide accurate casualty figures after a more detailed assessment.”
He added that, according to initial reports, five houses had also been destroyed and said that he expected the numbers of casualties reported to rise.
In the early hours of that day, at around 1:00 am, the junta bombed a clinic in a displaced people’s (IDP) camp in the western part of Demoso Township in Karenni State. Fortunately no casualties were reported as a result of the airstrike, though two buildings, a bathroom and a toilet, as well as a car were damaged in the airstrike.
This was the second airstrike on Demoso Township since the beginning of July.
An IDP sheltering in western Demoso Township said: “These days, the junta mostly uses 200-pound bombs in its airstrikes, and sometimes even 500-pound bombs. The explosions are so loud, they can almost burst your eardrums, even if you’re quite far away. The conditions for people who are directly hit are unimaginable. The junta also frequently targets schools and hospitals.”
Previously, on 9 July 2025, a junta airstrike on Loelawhtee Village, Mawchi Township, killed five people including a child and seriously injured another five people.
