Junta Attacks Jade Mining Companies in Hpakant

Junta soldiers stationed in Lone Khin Village Tract in Kachin State’s Hpakant Township have been attacking jade mining companies and destroying their equipment resulting in deaths and injuries.

On 31 May 2025 in Mawsisar Village in Lone Khin Village Tract junta troops burned down the staff dormitory at the 111 Jade Mining company compound and set fire to and destroyed two backhoes removed from mining sites near Mawsisar Village, along with other heavy machinery and vehicles.

Junta soldiers returned to the 111 Jade Mining compound at around 8:00 am on 3 June and destroyed several more vehicles belonging to the company.

A resident of Mawsisar Village said: “At around 8:00 am, soldiers set fire to a backhoe, two dump trucks, and a guard tower at the 111 Jade Mining Company's site in Mawsisar Village. They had already burned some of the company’s property earlier, including the cookhouse, back on 31 May.”

Later that day, 3 June, at around 1:00 pm an artillery shell hit a jade mining company building where gunpowder was being stored and caused an explosion in Saungchain Village, just north of Mawsisar Village in Lone Khin Village Tract. Two employees were killed and around 20 others were injured.

A woman from Lone Khin Village Tract said: “Around 1:00 pm, the junta fired an artillery shell that hit the company compound and caused casualties among its employees. Some people say it wasn’t an artillery shell, but a bomb dropped by a drone. It was a direct hit on the company’s gunpowder warehouse. What’s certain is that there were casualties.”

The junta is attempting to regain full control of Hpakant Township.

On 27 May, a junta column of about 100 troops entered the Lone Khin Village Tract and set up camp on Pagoda Hill in Mawsisar Village. Since then, five civilians have been killed in sporadic fighting between the junta soldiers and the KIA in Lone Khin Village Tract.
