Death toll in Myanmar from Depayin school airstrike rises to 24 as injured student dies

An 11-year-old student injured in the Myanmar military’s airstrike on a school in Ohtein Dwin (North) village, Depayin Township, Sagaing Region, died on the morning of 14 May, bringing the total number of deaths from the attack to 24, according to the Depayin Township People’s Administration.

The victim, Ma Pyae Pyae Nyein, was a 3rd Grade student who succumbed to injuries caused by shrapnel from bomb fragments that struck multiple parts of her body.

“The child succumbed to injuries caused by shrapnel from the bomb fragments that struck all over her body,” a member of the administration told Mizzima.

The military carried out the airstrike on 12 May at around 9:40 am, targeting the village school located about seven and a half miles southwest of Depayin. The attack initially killed 20 students and two teachers and left 102 people injured. On 13 May, an eight-year-old 2nd Grade student, Maung Aung Zeya, also died from injuries sustained in the same attack.

With Ma Pyae Pyae Nyein’s passing, the death toll has now reached 24.

About 100 injured individuals are still receiving medical care, with at least three reportedly in critical condition. However, due to ongoing challenges in the conflict zone, detailed information on those who lost limbs or are facing life-threatening conditions remains unavailable, officials from the People’s Administration said.

This incident is now considered the second deadliest airstrike in Depayin Township since the 2022 military attack on Let Yet Kone village, which killed 13 civilians, including 11 children.
