Junta Moves Troops, Cash from Thandwe to Yangon Amid Escalating Conflict

The junta has relocated over 400 soldiers, police officers, and their families from Thandwe Township in Arakan (Rakhine) State to Yangon via a naval transport, along with 2 billion MMK withdrawn from the Myanma Economic Bank (MEC).

According to a source monitoring the situation, a naval vessel departed from the Maung Shwe Lay naval base on the morning of July 14, heading to the Thanlyin (Tanyin) naval base in Yangon with the personnel and funds.

"Following the advance of Arakha Army (AA) troops towards Thandwe, the junta moved the cash from Thandwe MEC to the 55th Infantry Battalion in Ngapali. Before the battalion fell, the funds were transferred to Maung Shwe Lay naval base and subsequently sent to Yangon," the source reported.

In addition, some government employees who fled the clashes in Thandwe have been reassigned to departments in Gwa and Yangon.

AA has recently captured key military positions, including the Thandwe-based 566th Light Infantry Battalion on June 27, Mazin Airport in Ngapali on July 5, and the 55th Infantry Battalion in Thandwe on July 9. The junta forces, now in retreat, are consolidating their defenses in Thandwe while facing a determined challenge from AA, which aims to take control of the entire town.

The conflict escalated from a skirmish between Yaesin and Gwaechaung villages on April 13, leading to widespread fighting between AA and junta in Thandwe.

Since June 25, as AA troops approached Thandwe's outskirts, all junta employees in the town, including police personnel, have evacuated amid rising tensions.
